Pest Challenges in Athens
The same sunny climate that draws millions of visitors to Athens every year also creates ideal conditions for pests. Long, hot summers encourage cockroach activity in drains and basements, mosquitoes breed in garden saucers and stagnant water, and rodents are attracted to busy neighbourhoods with restaurants and markets. In greener suburbs such as Kifisia, Ekali and Penteli, homeowners may also face termites, wasps and pine processionary caterpillars, which can be dangerous to pets and children.
Professional pest control is therefore not a luxury for many Athenians but a regular part of property maintenance. Restaurants, hotels and food businesses also need certified pest management to meet health and safety standards. The following providers are widely recognised for effective, responsible treatments.
What Makes a Good Pest Control Company
The best pest control companies use integrated pest management, which combines inspection, prevention and targeted treatment rather than relying solely on heavy chemical spraying. They use approved products, explain safety precautions, and offer follow-up visits. For businesses, proper documentation and compliance reports are essential.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pest Control in Athens
When is the best time for pest control treatments in Athens?
Late spring is ideal for preventive treatments against cockroaches, ants and mosquitoes, before the peak summer season. Rodent control is often most important in autumn and winter, when rats and mice seek shelter indoors. Termite inspections can be done at any time of year.
Are pest control treatments safe for children and pets?
Reputable companies use approved products and explain any precautions, such as keeping children and pets away from treated areas for a few hours. Gel baits and sealed bait stations are designed to minimise exposure, and eco-friendly options are available for sensitive households.
How can I deal with pine processionary caterpillars?
These caterpillars build silky nests in pine trees during winter and descend in spring. Their hairs can cause severe irritation to people and pets. Professional removal of nests, pheromone traps and targeted biological treatments are the safest solutions.
Do restaurants in Athens need professional pest control?
Food businesses must follow strict hygiene regulations, and a documented pest management programme from a certified provider is the standard way to demonstrate compliance during inspections.
