A City That Loves Green Space
Allentown has a long tradition of celebrating outdoor beauty. The Malcolm W. Gross Memorial Rose Garden, Cedar Creek Parkway, Trexler Park, and the Lehigh Parkway give residents easy access to lush landscapes. It is no surprise that many homeowners want to bring that same sense of beauty and calm to their own properties.
The region's climate offers both opportunities and challenges. Clay-heavy soils, hot humid summers, cold winters, and occasional drought periods require thoughtful plant selection and soil management. Experienced landscapers understand these conditions and design outdoor spaces that thrive season after season.
Services Offered by Landscaping Companies
Landscaping companies range from lawn maintenance crews to full design-build firms. Common services include mowing, fertilization, weed control, aeration and overseeding, mulching, tree and shrub care, seasonal cleanups, and snow removal. Design-build firms add landscape architecture, hardscaping such as patios and retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, lighting, irrigation, and water features.
When selecting a company, review portfolios, ask about certifications from organizations such as the Pennsylvania Landscape and Nursery Association, and confirm insurance coverage.

Landscaping Trends in the Lehigh Valley
Native plants are becoming a top priority as homeowners seek low-maintenance landscapes that support pollinators and wildlife. Species such as coneflower, black-eyed Susan, switchgrass, and serviceberry thrive in eastern Pennsylvania and require less water and fertilizer.
Outdoor living spaces continue to dominate design requests. Paver patios, fire pits, pergolas, and outdoor kitchens extend usable living space well into fall. Landscape lighting adds security and ambiance, while smart irrigation systems conserve water by adjusting schedules based on weather data. Stormwater management, including rain gardens and permeable pavers, is also gaining interest as municipalities encourage sustainable runoff solutions.
Seasonal Landscaping Tips
In spring, clean up beds, apply pre-emergent weed control, and refresh mulch. Summer calls for proper mowing heights, deep but infrequent watering, and pest monitoring. Fall is the best time for aeration, overseeding, and planting trees and shrubs. Before winter, cut back perennials, wrap vulnerable shrubs, and arrange snow removal services.
How to Choose a Landscaper
Define your goals and budget, then request on-site consultations from several companies. Ask for references and photos of completed projects, and clarify maintenance responsibilities after installation. For design-build projects, review drawings carefully and confirm warranties on plants and hardscape work.
Hardscaping Built for Freeze-Thaw Cycles
Patios, walkways, and retaining walls in Allentown must withstand repeated freezing and thawing. Proper installation starts with excavation and a compacted gravel base that drains water away rather than trapping it. Interlocking pavers are especially popular because they flex slightly with ground movement and can be repaired by replacing individual units. Retaining walls need drainage stone and pipes behind them to relieve water pressure. Asking a landscaper to explain their base preparation process is one of the best ways to judge whether a hardscape project will last for decades.
Snow Removal and Winter Services
Many Lehigh Valley landscaping companies keep crews busy in winter with snow plowing, sidewalk clearing, and de-icing. Allentown requires property owners to clear sidewalks within a set time after snowfall, so bundling winter services with your landscaping contract can save time and help you stay compliant. Ask about trigger depths, response times, and whether salt or eco-friendly de-icers are used near plantings.
Final Thoughts
A well-designed landscape enhances curb appeal, increases property value, and provides a personal retreat. Whether you need weekly lawn care or a complete backyard transformation, these ten Allentown landscaping companies offer the expertise to bring your outdoor vision to life.
