Between visits, homeowners can do the highest-value items themselves: change filters on schedule, keep two to three feet of clearance around the outdoor unit, rinse the outdoor coil gently with a hose when dusty, clear the condensate drain line, and program setback schedules rather than manually swinging the thermostat.
Hiring and Pricing Considerations
Verify an active California contractors license with the appropriate mechanical classification, plus liability insurance and workers compensation. Ask whether permits will be pulled for equipment replacement, because California requires them and permitted work triggers duct leakage and refrigerant charge verification that protects the homeowner.
Get at least three replacement bids and compare the full scope: load calculation, equipment model numbers and matched coil, duct work included, thermostat, filtration, permit, warranty registration, and labor warranty length. Ask about available utility rebates and federal efficiency tax credits for heat pumps, which can materially change the economics. Finally, plan replacements for spring or fall when scheduling is easier and pricing is more competitive, rather than during an August failure when options narrow to whatever is in stock.
