Heating and Cooling in Athens
Athens has a classic Mediterranean climate, with long, hot summers and mild but sometimes chilly winters. Heatwaves with temperatures above forty degrees have become more frequent, making air conditioning essential for comfort and health. In winter, many older buildings still rely on central heating oil boilers, although heat pumps and natural gas are rapidly replacing them.
The HVAC market in Athens includes international manufacturers with strong local distribution, certified installers and maintenance companies. Here are ten of the best HVAC brands and service providers in Athens.
What to Look for in an HVAC Provider
A professional HVAC company calculates heating and cooling loads accurately rather than simply selling the largest unit. Installers should be certified to handle refrigerants, follow manufacturer guidelines and offer maintenance plans. Energy efficiency ratings, noise levels, warranties and after-sales support are key considerations.

HVAC Trends in Athens
Heat pumps are leading the transition away from heating oil, supported by energy upgrade subsidies. Inverter technology and higher energy efficiency classes are now standard. Indoor air quality has become a priority, with filtration and ventilation systems gaining popularity. Smart thermostats and app-based controls help households manage energy costs, while low global warming potential refrigerants are becoming more common.
How to Choose an HVAC System
Have a professional assess your home's size, insulation, orientation and usage. Compare energy efficiency ratings and estimated running costs, not just purchase prices. Choose a certified installer and ask about warranties, maintenance plans and response times for repairs. For apartment buildings, check regulations on outdoor unit placement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an air conditioner heat my home in winter? Yes. Modern inverter air conditioners are efficient heat pumps and can provide comfortable heating during the mild Athens winter.
How often should I service my air conditioner? An annual service before summer is recommended, with filter cleaning every few weeks during heavy use.
Are heat pumps worth it compared with oil boilers? For most Athens homes, heat pumps offer lower running costs, cleaner operation and the added benefit of cooling in summer.
Energy Savings and Subsidies
Upgrading to a modern HVAC system can significantly reduce energy bills. High-efficiency inverter units consume far less electricity than older fixed-speed models, and heat pumps provide heating at a fraction of the cost of heating oil. Greek energy upgrade programmes have periodically offered subsidies for heat pumps and efficient systems, making upgrades more affordable. Combining an HVAC upgrade with insulation improvements delivers the greatest savings and comfort.
A qualified installer can estimate potential savings based on your current consumption, helping you decide which system offers the best return on investment.
Conclusion
Athens residents can choose from excellent HVAC brands such as Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Toshiba, LG, Inventor, Fujitsu and Samsung, supported by skilled installers and maintenance providers. Investing in an efficient, properly installed system ensures comfort through scorching summers and cool winters while keeping energy bills under control.
