Furnishing Homes in Historic Savannah
Savannah's homes range from grand antebellum mansions and historic townhouses to modern condos, suburban family homes, and beach cottages on nearby islands. Each style calls for thoughtful furniture choices. Historic homes often feature high ceilings, tall windows, and intricate moldings that pair beautifully with classic and antique pieces, while newer homes invite contemporary and coastal designs.
The city's furniture stores reflect this diversity. Shoppers can find traditional Southern furniture, coastal-inspired décor, mid-century modern pieces, and custom upholstery. Many local retailers also offer interior design services that help homeowners create cohesive, personalized spaces.

Coastal design continues to be popular, especially in homes near Tybee Island and the marshes. Light colors, natural textures, and breezy fabrics create calm, inviting spaces.
Sustainability is influencing purchasing decisions. Shoppers increasingly seek furniture made from reclaimed wood, responsibly harvested materials, and non-toxic finishes. Buying vintage and antique furniture is also a sustainable way to add character.
Furnishing Historic Homes
Historic homes present unique challenges. Narrow staircases and doorways can make delivery difficult, so measuring carefully before purchasing is essential. Scale also matters; high ceilings allow for tall bookcases, statement lighting, and large artwork, while smaller townhouse rooms benefit from multifunctional pieces.
Balancing historic character with modern comfort is key. Mixing antique pieces with comfortable contemporary upholstery creates spaces that feel authentic yet livable.
Caring for Furniture in a Humid Climate
Savannah's humidity can cause wood to swell, crack, or warp over time. Maintaining consistent indoor humidity with air conditioning and dehumidifiers protects wood furniture. Performance fabrics resist moisture, stains, and fading, making them a smart choice for households with children and pets. Outdoor furniture should be made from materials such as teak, aluminum, or all-weather wicker to withstand heat and rain.
Tips for Choosing a Furniture Store
Visit showrooms to test comfort and inspect construction quality. Ask about materials, frame construction, warranties, delivery timelines, and return policies. Many stores offer design consultations that help coordinate colors, layouts, and scale.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does custom furniture take to arrive? Custom upholstery and made-to-order pieces typically take several weeks to a few months depending on the manufacturer, fabric availability, and shipping schedules. In-stock items can often be delivered within days, so plan major purchases well ahead of a move or renovation.
What furniture styles work best in Savannah townhouses? Townhouses often have narrow footprints and tall ceilings. Apartment-size sofas, round dining tables, tall bookcases, and pieces with exposed legs keep rooms feeling open while taking advantage of vertical space.
How can I mix antiques with modern furniture? Choose one or two statement antiques, such as a sideboard or armoire, and surround them with simpler contemporary pieces. Repeating wood tones, metals, or colors throughout the room ties old and new together for a cohesive look.
Do stores help with delivery into historic homes? Many Savannah retailers offer white-glove delivery with experienced crews who can navigate narrow stairways, tight doorways, and delicate historic finishes.
