Tips for Choosing Furniture
Measure carefully before shopping, including doorways, stairways, and elevators, especially for condos and apartments common in Costa Mesa. Create a floor plan to visualize scale and traffic flow.
Prioritize quality for high-use pieces like sofas, mattresses, and dining chairs. Look for kiln-dried hardwood frames, solid joinery, and durable performance fabrics. Save on accent pieces and decor that can be swapped more easily.
Consider the coastal environment. Sun exposure can fade fabrics, so choose UV-resistant materials for sunny rooms. For patios, choose weather-resistant materials like teak, aluminum, and outdoor-rated fabrics.
Furniture Trends in Southern California
Organic shapes, curved sofas, and natural materials such as rattan, oak, and linen are popular. Neutral palettes with warm undertones, layered textures, and earthy accents reflect the relaxed coastal aesthetic. Multifunctional furniture remains important for smaller homes and home offices.
Sustainability continues to grow, with shoppers seeking certified wood, recycled materials, and vintage or secondhand pieces. Outdoor living spaces are treated as extensions of the home, driving demand for comfortable patio sets, fire pits, and outdoor dining furniture.
Furnishing Rentals and Small Spaces
Many Costa Mesa residents live in apartments, townhomes, and condos near Orange Coast College, the Westside, and the South Coast Metro area. For smaller spaces, choose apartment-sized sofas, nesting tables, wall-mounted shelving, and storage beds that keep floors clear. Light-colored finishes and mirrors help rooms feel larger and brighter. Modular furniture that can be reconfigured or moved easily is a smart choice for renters who expect to relocate within a few years.
