Metairie homes reflect a blend of traditional Southern style, classic New Orleans influences and modern design. From raised cottages and ranch homes to new construction and renovated condos, residents seek furniture that is comfortable, durable and beautiful. The region's warm, humid climate also influences furniture choices, as materials must hold up to moisture and heat.
Metairie is a major shopping destination for home furnishings, with showrooms along Veterans Memorial Boulevard and nearby corridors. Residents can choose from locally owned stores with long histories, national manufacturers with dedicated showrooms and custom craftsmen who create one-of-a-kind pieces.

Choosing Furniture for the Metairie Climate
Humidity can cause wood to swell and contract, so well-constructed pieces with quality joinery and finishes perform best. Performance fabrics resist stains and moisture, making them ideal for families and pets. For outdoor spaces, choose materials such as powder-coated aluminum, teak or high-quality synthetic wicker, paired with fade-resistant cushions. Climate control and dehumidification help protect fine furniture and antiques.
Design Trends in Metairie Homes
Many homeowners are blending traditional New Orleans elements, such as antique-inspired pieces and rich wood tones, with modern lines and lighter color palettes. Reclaimed wood and natural textures remain popular. Comfortable, oversized sectionals suit casual entertaining. Home offices have become a priority, increasing demand for ergonomic desks and storage. Outdoor living spaces continue to expand, with furniture designed to extend the home into courtyards and patios.
Shopping Tips
Measure rooms, doorways and stairways before purchasing. Examine construction details, including frame materials, joinery and cushion quality. Ask about warranties, delivery and assembly. If you live in a flood-prone area, consider furniture with raised legs and avoid storing valuable items on ground floors. Custom pieces may take longer to arrive, so plan ahead for major projects.
The Value of Local Showrooms
Visiting local showrooms allows you to test comfort, see colors in person and get advice from experienced staff. Many local stores offer design consultations and long-term customer relationships. Buying locally also supports community businesses and makes service and returns easier.
Caring for Your Furniture
Proper care helps furniture last for decades in the Metairie climate. Keep wood pieces away from direct sunlight and air conditioning vents to reduce fading and cracking. Use coasters and felt pads to prevent damage, and dust regularly with a soft cloth. Rotate cushions to maintain their shape, and follow manufacturer cleaning codes for upholstery. Outdoor furniture should be cleaned periodically and stored or secured before tropical storms, since high winds can turn patio pieces into dangerous projectiles. Quality furniture, well maintained, can become a treasured family heirloom.
Final Thoughts
Metairie shoppers have access to a wide range of furniture options, from long-standing local institutions to respected national manufacturers and talented custom woodworkers. By considering craftsmanship, climate and personal style, you can choose furniture that brings comfort and beauty to your home for many years.
