The Role of Education Consultants
Navigating college admissions, financial aid, and academic planning can be overwhelming for families. Education consultants provide expert guidance on choosing schools, writing application essays, preparing for interviews, and planning for financial aid. For international students, consultants also help with visas and study abroad applications.
Gresham families have access to a wide range of consulting services, from premium private advisors to free community-based programs. School counselors play an important role too, but they often serve hundreds of students, so additional support can be valuable.
How to Choose an Education Consultant
Look for consultants with professional credentials, experience, and a track record of helping students. Membership in professional organizations, such as the Independent Educational Consultants Association, signals a commitment to ethical standards. Ask about services, fees, and communication. Be cautious of anyone who guarantees admission to a specific school.

Local Insight: College Planning for Gresham Families
Many Gresham students are first-generation college students, meaning their parents did not attend college. For these families, the admissions and financial aid process can feel unfamiliar and overwhelming. Free programs such as ASPIRE, along with school counselors and college access organizations, provide critical guidance on applications, scholarships, and financial aid forms.
Gresham families also benefit from Oregon-specific opportunities. The Oregon Promise grant can help eligible recent graduates attend community college at reduced cost, and the Oregon Opportunity Grant provides need-based aid for students attending Oregon colleges and universities. Transfer pathways from Mt. Hood Community College to four-year universities offer an affordable route to a bachelor's degree. Education consultants can help families weigh these options, compare financial aid packages, and create a plan that fits both academic goals and budgets, ensuring students make informed decisions about their futures.
