Shippers without rail access should investigate transload options before dismissing the mode, since a truck drayage leg at each end frequently still leaves rail cheaper on long hauls. Those considering rail should also plan for transit time variability and build inventory buffers accordingly, since rail transit is less precise than truckload even under scheduled operating models.
